Centuries ago Britain strived to be the workshop of the world, but in recent decades the UK's imports have outstripped its exports. This is keenly felt in the construction products sector, where the UK's trade deficit has widened from £9l4m in 1998 to £6.3bn in 2012. The government insists it wants to close that gap and together with the industry published its construction industrial strategy this month as an initial step towards that goal, alongside several others.
