The Treasury is expected to underwrite half the debt on the £600m Mersey Gateway scheme after Halton Borough Council chose its preferred consortium to build the new toll bridge. The Merseylink consortium -which includes a construction team of FCC, Kier and Samsung -was chosen for a 30-year contract to design, build, finance and operate the bridge over the River Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes, as well as associated work in the towns.
