Step on the gas: The huge potential in petrol stations

When the Bloomsbury service station, one of Britain's oldest petrol stations, finally closed in June 2008, it brought to an end more than 80 years of trading. It is hard to see how such a prime piece of real estate, just off Tottenham Court Road in central London, could have escaped development for so long. Yet it remained active from its opening in 1926, before being transformed into a thoroughly modern development comprising a restaurant and office buildings.
