When I speak to other business leaders and tell them that my organisation represents small and medium-sized construction firms, they look at me enviously and tell me how lucky we are to have government on our side. They say things like: "government is really keen to support growth in construction and housing and to help SMEs", and so on, but this is, at best, a simplistic view of the policy landscape. Although the FMB and those organisations we work with have helped push construction and housing up the political agenda, government policy is misfiring on some fronts.
