This book brings together a stimulating selection of thinking and writing that deserves the attention of experienced researchers and industry representatives. We have had construction economics and construction economists for more than 50 years; we do ourselves no favours by being quite so uncertain about what it is and they are. We should immediately put in hand a serious debate (actual or virtual) with a view to describing, if not defining, the subject area and providing a credible research framework for academics and other researchers, industry practitioners and governments. This is an excellent starting point. Modem Construction Economics: Theory and Application is not an obvious textbook though it will provide useful references for higher degree students, nor is it an easy read for practitioners. It is a collection of papers by construction academics mostly (but not all) based outside the UK, edited by Gerard de Valence of the University of Technology in Sydney who is also responsible for three of the 11 chapters. Its stated aim is to help establish construction economics as a distinct field of study.
