Output in the sector has risen considerably in recent years and is forecast to rise further near term. However, the rise in public housing will not offset the sharp falls in private housing leading to an increasingly difficult near term for house builders. In the long term, government finances are likely to restrict growth and targets for public housing are not expected to be met.
