Europe's largest tunnelling project, the gigantic £14.8 billion (€17.4 billion) Crossrail scheme in London, UK, reached its peak activity this year with some 10,000 workers busy on 42km of the new underground rail system, and a half dozen major underground stations. Another 90km of surface line and further stations make up the total project. It will ultimately increase London's transport capacity by 10%, linking the eastern suburbs with the west and Heathrow Airport, via central London, with multiple connections into the Underground system.
