Legislation on exhaust emissions has been focusing the minds of engine manufacturers for years, and 2014 will be remembered for regulation landmarks in Europe, with Stage Ⅳ coming into force in January or October, depending on engine size. The directive has been introduced in stages, to give the industry time to adapt and develop its technologies. Broadly, Stage IIIB came into effect in 2011, Stage Ⅳ this year, and Stage Ⅴ is expected to be in force around 2019. In Europe, engines of between 130 and 560kW had to conform to Stage Ⅳ from 1 January, 2014. For engines, of 56 to 129kW, October is when it comes into force. Engine manufacturers and construction equipment OEMs have been working hard to ensure the new criteria are met.
