This page has served recently as a bully pulpit of sorts, hammering away at organizations that do not fully appreciate or utilize the expertise of their equipment manager. The message has been two-fold. First, realize that private construction firms face stiff competition, which means they must finely hone their bids in order to maintain or grow profitability. Organizations must manage, and manage correctly, their equipment costs so they can submit accurate and competitive bids. For a public fleet, taxpayers continue to scrutinize costs as municipal, state and local pension obligations exert pressure on finances. Second, upper management and public overseers do not always understand nor realize that their equipment professional possesses and can articulate accurate financial and asset-management information that furthers the organization's business or public-service goals.
