Fire-Suppression Systems Designed to Protect Operators and Machines

For equipment owners using machines in locations such as mines, landfills, transfer stations, logging operations, mill yards, recycling centers, and steel/slag facilities, on-board fires are a constant concern. In these situations, an integral fire-suppression system can allow time for operators to safely exit a vehicle on fire, minimize physical damage to the machine, and reduce the risk of fire threatening surrounding areas. According to AFEX Fire Su-pression Systems, these protective systems, which can be installed both at the factory and in the field, include four basic components: tanks holding a fire-fighting agent along with a propellant to discharge the agent (propellant might be contained in a separate tank); a series of temperature-activated sensors; a network of lines and nozzles (often stainless steel) to distribute the agent in critical areas; and a micro-processor control unit.
