The chocolate market expands by 2-3% every year. Whilst this is good news for the industry, it is important to note that supply is not keeping up with demand. Barry Parkin, global commercial and sustainability vice president at Mars Chocolate, has predicted a shortfall of one million tonnes by 2020. Confectionery manufacturers, NGOs and governments are aware of this problem. But what is anyone really doing to solve it? Last year, Barry Callebaut organised the Chocovision conference, held in Davos, Switzerland, and this year the Asia Choco Congress was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Both conferences enabled leaders in the chocolate and cocoa industry to meet and discuss sustainable growth strategies for the industry - an important first step in finding a solution, but talking about it isn't enough.
