A healthier future

One of the key growth areas within the confectionery industry has been the functional confectionery sector. Between 2006 and 2010, global market value increased by almost 38 per cent to $11 billion (€8.6bn), although this still represents less than 11 per cent of total sales. As the market has grown, so has the number of confectionery products marketed as offering specific health benefits. Although confectionery products offering heart and digestive health benefits have appeared in larger numbers, they have yet to appear in the quantities initially predicted by some industry sources.
