Theatre and Arts Centre leads honours in 2000/2001 Awards

The climax to The Concrete Society's Annual Awards Dinner on 16 November 2000 was the announcement by Professor Peter Hewlett, chairman of the judges and immediate past-president of the Society, that the overall winner in the Society's 2000/2001 Awards for Outstanding New Structures was the Market Place Theatre and Arts Centre, Armagh, Northern Ireland. Described in detail in the October issue of CONCRETE, this outstanding project attracted the following comments from the judges: "A building that exemplifies all the positive attributes of concrete -visual harmony with its surrounding environment, quality of aesthetic finish, attention to the smallest of detail, and its use for environmental control. But most significant of all was the obvious pleasure from the public visiting the centre, as noted by the judges during their visit. A concrete structure that receives such an accolade must be acknowledged." Unusually, the entire envelope of the structure is made from polished concrete.
