From Aesthetic Vision to Concrete Reality

Based on concerns about its role within the larger, more technically-oriented ACI community, ACI Committee 124, Concrete Aesthetics, recently discussed how the committee can best work toward significantly improving the visual quality of the concrete-built environment. A key outcome of those discussions was the realization that the committee must first define its audience—the "consumers" and the "creators" of aesthetic concrete. By doing so, it can then direct its publications, educational materials, and symposium presentations to better educate both ACI and the community at large. Clearly, we must consider the group of consumers to include: 1. The public; 2. Elected officials; and 3. Government agencies—the bureaucrats. The group of creators should include: 4. Architects and engineers; 5. Engineering and architecture students; and 6. Contractors and craftsmen. In the following, however, I will focus the discussion on key members of those groups, with the hope that this discussion will help us as an organization to better know and serve our aesthetic audience.
