Last year, some 100 million tonnes of cargo passed through the river port of Duisburg by ship, train and truck, employing over 15,000 people directly or indirectly. This makes it the most important trading and traffic hub in the Rhine/Ruhr region of Germany. Not surprisingly, therefore, the city is rapidly developing into one of Europe's leading logistics centres. The progress made by the port - now often related to the seaports of Antwerp, Rotterdam and Hamburg - is largely explained by the repositioning strategy of the Duisburger Hafen Group, the port operator that launched a new marketing policy under the brand name of Duisport in March 2000. This strategy aims to attract more logistics service providers, as a further way of improving the amount of cargo handled.
