What a waste!

Wastepaper has become the largest volume containerised commodity being shipped from the US to Asia. Niels Erich, a spokesman for the Westbound Transpacific Stabilization Agreement (WTSA), stated that of the 3.7 million TEU shipped from all US ports to Asia in 2003, 20% comprised wastepaper shipments. As these shipments (like the transpacific trade in general) are mostly made in 40ft, or perhaps some 45ft high-cube, containers, wastepaper shipments amounted to around 367,000FEU in 2003. Little or no use is made of bulk capacity. Albert A Pierce, WTSA's managing director, pointed out at the Agriculture Ocean Transportation Coalition annual meeting in San Francisco on June 4, 2004 that wastepaper shipments to Asia increased by 28% in 2003, compared with 2002, while kraft linerboard shipments rose by 21%.
