Booming chicken exports out of Brazil are booming no longer, according to a senior MOL executive, based in Sao Paulo. Paulo Simoes, a director for MOL-South America Ltda, told CI how, in certain markets, the demand for Brazilian chicken is plummeting, and carryings are 30-40% less than the same period of 2005. This situation is of concern to ocean carriers, and contrasts sharply with the previous five years, when chicken exports rose by 20-25% annually. Indeed, Brazil overtook the US as the leading exporter of chicken in 2005, and the meat now accounts for about 3.66% of total exports in value terms.
