Colour-blinded as we go green?

Joni Casey, president and chief executive officer of the Intermodal Association of North America, sees environmental initiatives posing increasing challenges for global transportation as multilayered 'green' efforts cause confusion, add to shipping costs and imperil the ability to meet growing capacity demands. One surely cannot argue against the importance of ensuring a healthy planet for the future, but the proliferation of federal, state and local regulations focused on a 'green' tomorrow have many in the US transportation industry scrambling to keep up, let alone plan for the future. Already, environmental mandates are spurring shifts in how and where cargo is moved, as well as adding to shipping costs that, ultimately, are passed onto consumers on a full spectrum of goods.
