Genoa has not been one of the Mediterranean's success stories over the past five years.rnThe port has lurched from bad to worse in so many different ways that it is a miracle it still remains on the map as Italy's foremost container gateway. As shown in the table, it has failed to capitalise on the growth of imports from China since 2003, due to more competition from other ports.rnAs everyone has got used to its laborious approach, and there is always La Spezia next door for those who want something different, one is entitled to ask if it matters anymore, particularly as the recession has taken away much of the gateway's congestion.
