An influential US trade body has slammed recent proposals to raise the controversial Harbor Maintenance Tax (HMT) in order to fund ongoing dredging and port infrastructure projects.rnThe industry has long complained that large chunks of the HMT receipts are siphoned off to fund other spending commitments.rnIn a recent letter to Peter DeFazio, chairman of the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA) president Mary Jo Muoio expressed strong opposition to a measure that it claims more than triples thernexisting HMT on cargo shipped into the US to fund highway, rail and port projects.
