US intermodal volumes on the move

North American intermodal volumes ended 2009 showing encouraging signs of recovery following a very difficult year.rnWhile combined North American intermodal volumes, including Canada and Mexico, also fell by 14% to 12.2 million units.rnAccording to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), whose figures include traffic moving in the US and Canada, intermodal volumes declined 15% in 2009 to 11.7 million units (see graph).rnInternational traffic fared particularly badly, sinking 21% to 6.1 million units, while domestic traffic fell just 6% to 5.6 million units.
