CO_2 Reduction by maximization of Volume Transport. In order to create a sustainable environment, and achieve the goals regarding CO_2 set for the industry by Brussels, DAF Trucks searches for possibilities to reduce fuel economy. Besides improving engine, driveline, and overall vehicle systems, a solution can be found in maximizing the volume of goods being transported per transport movement and therewith reducing the amount of CO_2 in tons/km. Since this is not only important for road transport but also for Tri-Modal Transport, DAF Trucks participates in an EU Funded FP7 Project called TelliSys where goals have been set to develop a transport system of a truck, trailer and container, with a strong focus on automotive logistics, which reaches 3.0 meters inner loading height within a total (legal max.) height of the combination of 4.0 meters, while still being able to carry around 44T internationally. This has great influence on the tractor design. Goal is to develop a 6×2 tractor unit with a fifth wheel height of only 850 mm which can be used for multiple applications. Due to maneuverability desired on the European roads, and the fact chosen for a 22.5" single driving axle solution for fuel economy, the vehicle configuration changes drastically. Axle loads shift, and limits are reached around chassis design, packaging and suspension concepts. A prototype is built in the 4th quarter of 2014. Presenting the evaluation of this new vehicle concept, as part of Project TelliSys, will answer the question how Maximum Volume Transport in future can look like.
