THE maritime industry is an exciting and fascinating sector, steeped in history and tradition with strong charismatic Leaders. Even today, it is still frequently dominated by family shipowning interests that exert real influence over industry behaviours, strategies and thinking. Moreover, even with the onset of containerisation and more recent technological innovations, there is still a sense that every sailing is a bit of an adventure. While today one's whole livelihood may not be at stake in that adventure, there's still an air of uncertainty, even risk, as to whether the ship will be on schedule, arrive at the predestined port of arrival or that a shipper's goods will arrive on time and in good condition.
