Tape Music in San Francisco

The 2009 San Francisco Tape Music Festival, "Le poeme electronique-50 years later ...," took place over the three days 30 January-1 February 2009. The festival included both new and classic audio art diffused over a surround-sound system of over 20 speakers. The classic pieces included Pierre Schaeffer's Etude aux Sons Animes (1958), Olivier Messiaen's Timbres-Durees (1952), and Vladimir Ussachevsky's Linear Contrasts (1958), among others. The many newer works included commissions from Thorn Blum, Matt Ingalls, Kent Jolly, and Cliff Caruthers. Two lunch-time public workshops on sound diffusion were held, and radio broadcasts with interviews and music from the San Francisco Tape Music Collective coincided with the festival.
