All information systems need storage, and the requirements for increasing amounts grow daily. Technological improvements are helping in some ways to satisfy this demand. Since 1995, the capacity of typical disk drives has increased by 80% every year. In the same time period, the price per gigabyte has dropped by 50% annually. This combination of size with economy has led to storage being treated as a commodity technology by many. Even so, most IT managers have to struggle to keep up with the enormous growth spurt that has taken place within their organizations. The growth is driven by a combination of factors including more complex applications, email, image and video files, and government compliance requirements.
