A Competition Which Should Never Have Happened: The Berlin Schloss Debacle

Seldom has a project been surrounded with so much historical baggage and controversy as the most recent Berlin Schloss (Berlin Palace) competition. Dating back to the 15th century, and completed on the exterior during the reign of Friedrich Wilhelm I in the early 18th century, the Schloss was severely damaged by Allied bombing during World War II. What remained of it was demolished in 1950 during the Communist Ulbricht regime to make way for a nondescript government administration building.
