Young and Creative: Digital Technologies Empowering Children in Everyday Life

One of the major research challenges inherent in a work about technology is the blistering pace of innovation, and perhaps more importantly, adoption or dissemination. A common threat to rigorous and thoughtful contemporary research is that by the time readers are able to take in the work, the media landscape may not be the same: tools and systems may have disappeared completely (e.g., Vine), user demographics have shifted dramatically (e.g., Facebook), and even the underlying media ethos may have matured beyond initial conceptions (I offer the maturation of "text messaging" here as a medium whose social, emotional, and technological shift has been profound over the last 10 years). These challenges should not stop us from conducting such research, of course, and Young and Creative: Digital Technologies Empowering Children in Everyday Life demonstrates that snapshots of research from a moment in time allow us to see things we otherwise might have missed.
