THE PROBLEM WITH diesel theft is that, more often than not, it's hard to detect. If a tank has been drained overnight then you know you've been robbed but, not to downplay the risk, hauliers are far more likely to succumb to small and regular 'skimming' of around 20 or 30 litres a time. It's incredibly difficult to identify, as the near endless variations on a vehicle's fuel economy mean businesses are unlikely ever to notice such an absence from a 300-plus-litre fuel tank. Security experts suggest the practice is typically limited to opportunists, and that organised fuel theft from vehicles out on the road is comparatively rare. They also point out that perpetrators are just as likely to be employees as they are external parties.
