In the present article, the authors present new data for synthesis gas ignition under practical conditions that, when used in conjunction with an earlier set of data from Peschke and Spadaccini, show considerable disagreement with what is predicted by state-of-the-art chemical kinetics models. This result is significant because coal-derived synthesis gas (i.e., syngas) is comprised primarily of H_2 and CO along with varying levels of CO_2 and other gases, and the CO/H_2 kinetics are often considered to be reasonably well known, even at elevated pressures and lower temperatures.
