Since late 70s research work on reactive dyes has shifted from simple rnonofunctional (either chlorotriazinyl or sulphatoethyl sulphonyl groups) to homobifunctional dyes to heterobifunctional reactive dyes. The first group of sumifix supra dyes, with both monochlorotriazinyl (MCT) and sulphato ethyl sulphonyl (SES) groups, were introduced by Sumitomo in 1980. Ciba-Geigy introduced cibacron C dyes with monofluorotriazinyl/sulphato ethyl sulphonyl dyes in 1988. Hetero functional reactive dyes are now increasingly used on cellulosic fibres. They give higher levels of fixation and stronger dye-fibre bonds on cotton compared to rnonofunctional reactive dyes.
