This is a romantic story of a major industrial rebirth, for by the mid Sixties BMW was back in its pomp. Totally recovered from the wartime traumas of the Forties and the financial upheavals of the Fifties, it now had a rebuilt and modernized factory in downtown Munich, a huge order book, ever-increasing sales-and ambition to do a whole lot more. The time was ripe for the next big investment to take place. But it had not always been like that. Until 1939, BMW cars had been built in Eisenach, a town halfway between the Ruhr and Berlin, but after the war this town found itself behind the Iron Curtain and no longer accessible to BMW. From then on, the company would concentrate on a much-bombed plant in Munich, where they have been centered ever since. Years of struggle in the Fifties saw them fight back to viability, not only with big and bulbous cars, but with motorcycles, bubble cars, and small family sedans.
