When race fans opened their programs for the 17th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 1929, they were sure to come across a two-page spread boldly headlined "Studebaker's World Champion Paces the Race." On the track they could see a striking silver-and-black President roadster like the one in the advertisement. It stood poised to lead 33 racing machines and their drivers in a flying start to a roughly five-hour quest for a new champion.
