The Ford Division of Ford Motor Company was going through a product upheaval during the Sixties. It was hardly alone. Through the end of the Fifties, things had been so much more straightforward. A manufacturer staked out its price range—one of the "low-priced three" in Ford's case—and then garnered most, if not all, of its sales from one basic car line dressed up (or down) to meet the needs of shoppers in that range.
