Dick Teague had a way with words. In the early Seventies, I asked him to tell me about his old boss, Harley Earl. "No one ever called him Harley," Teague began. "When he talked to you, you stood up straight, looked him in the eye about 10 feet in the air, and you called him Mister Earl. You said, 'Yes Mister Earl, that's right Mister Earl,' and it always came out as one word: Misterl. If you'd have called him Harley, he probably would have fired you." Richard A. Teague was American Motors' design vice president by that time, but he'd worked for Earl (CA, December 2005, February 2006) as a young man 30 years earlier.
