Sunbeam cooked up the Tiger by closely following Shelby's Cobra recipe: Take one savory British two-seater and heat to boiling with a Ford small-block V-8. When the Sunbeam Alpine was introduced in 1959, no one could have imagined it would be the basis of one of the hottest cars of the Sixties. The British-made two-seat convertible had the right sports car profile, but it was rather docile. The difference came when the Alpine was mated with a small American Ford V-8, a transformational event that turned the car into a tiger as much in fact as it did in name.
