In 1967, the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors Corporation was the oldest surviving automobile manufacturer in America, having been founded as the Olds Motor Vehicle Company in 1897 by Ransom Eli Olds. In its earliest days, the marque was known for light, inexpensive runabouts. Then the company's financial backers decided they wanted to build larger, costlier automobiles. An angry R. E. Olds, who favored small, low-priced cars, quit and went on to found the Reo Motor Car Company in 1904. In 1908, William C. Durant created General Motors by bringing together Buick and Olds. In time, Oldsmobile became a medium-price car. There it remained for decades, comfortably ensconced between Pontiac and Buick in GM's "car for every purse and purpose" hierarchy
