By the end of the 1962 model year, it was quite clear to General Motors management that its line of "senior compacts" from Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac had run its course. Introduced for 1961, the cars' unibody construction, unconventional drivelines, sometimes quirky performance characteristics, and reliability issues had buyers thinking twice about investing in them. The Y-body cars were facelifted one last time for '63 with more squared-off proportions and longer rear quarters that shed the last of their late-Fifties design cues.
