Joint U.S. Forces Korea Portal and Integrated Threat Reduction Advanced-Technology Demonstration

In response to the President's National Strategy for Biosurveillance, various agencies are analyzing the most cost-effective solutions to developing a global surveillance network that is capable of providing early warnings of the occurrence of natural or deliberate biological threats. The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center and the National Center for Medical Intelligence command much of the attention in the strategic biosurveillance arena; but chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) forces, equipment, and doctrine also play an important role. Without CBRN forces to collect and process samples, sensors to detect threats and provide warnings, and Soldiers to evaluate the resultant information and advise the commander, the biosurveillance mission is incomplete. The Chief of Chemical has charged CBRN Soldiers with serving as technical experts in their field, which includes biological operations. This directive comes at a time when the Army has removed the Biological Integrated Detection System from the Regular Army and when biological detection no longer commands the attention that it once did and still should.
