Platelets play an important role in the development and aggravation of atherosclerotic vascular disease (AVD). Anti-platelet substances such as aspirin are generally used in the primary and secondary treatment of AVD including acute coronary syndromes. However, vascular events recur in a significant proportion of patients despite antiplatelet therapy. It was suggested that for ASS socalled "resistant" states (AR) will lead to an increased susceptibility for recurrent thromboembolic events. The lack of a standard definition of biological antiplatelet resistance as well as the lack of standard diagnostic modality has hampered the field in identifying and treating this clinical entity. The aim of the study was to study whether platelet aggregation (PA) in response to submaximal concentrations of agonists could predict which subjects are "resistant" to aspirin. Serum thromboxane B2 (Tx B2) levels and PA with light transmission aggregometry (LTA) were measured at baseline and 24 hours after 325 mg aspirin administration in 58 healthy subjects.
