Serum resistin concentrations and risk of new onset heart failure in older persons. The Health, Aging, and Body Composition (Health ABC) Study

Resistin has been previously described as a 12.5 kDa adi-pokine but it is also produced in other cell types such as macrophages and cardiomyocytes.rnAlthough the exact function of resistin is not well known, it has been associated with insulin resistance, obesity, and inflammation. Serum concentrations are associated with risk for coronary heart diasease (CHD), heart failure (HF), renal dysfunction and stroke. In the Health, Aging, and Body Composition (Health ABC) Study, 2902 participants (73.6 ± 2.9 years, 48% men and 59% white) with prevalent HF were enrolled. Resistin was measured using a sandwich ELISA (Linco Research Inc., interassay CV 7.4%), serum leptin and adiponectin in duplicate by RIA.
