Acute hyperglycemia occurs in ~50% of all myocardial infarctions (MI) and worsens the prognosis in patients with or without diabetes. Otherwise, 65% of patients with MI and a negative history of diabetes can be diagnosed with dysglycemia (impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes) induced by release of catecholamines, cortisol, and glucagon. Besides oxidative stress, hyperglycemia may activate blood coagulation and platelets as well as stimulate inflammation and endothelial function. In the study, 60 patients with acute coronary syndrome were included in the first 12h after pain onset: a) 20 patients with a history of type 2 diabetes (T2D), b) 20 patients without known diabetes but serum glucose ≥7.0 mmol/L on admission (HG), and c) 20 patients with glucose <7.0 mmol/L (NG).
