The ability of a vehicle to automatically stop its engine when stationary and then restart when it is time to move can save significant quantities of fuel and reduce vehicle emissions in traffic jams. The process must be seamless, and it must not have any measurable effect on performance. Current technology is starting to adopt some of the features that were first developed for full hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The challenge is to achieve the most efficiency benefits from the smallest cost increment.
