Heart of the strategy

The idea that producers should take greater responsibility for the recovery of their packaging and products is at the centre of the UK governments resources and waste strategy. This has clearly been influenced by concerns about marine plastic pollution, and is closely linked to the 'polluter pays' principle - but it applies to all materials and is critical to the idea of a more circular economy. This involves producers taking into account the cost of recovering their materials at the design stage, and paying to ensure they are used again - ideally in the UK.
