The operation of total technology systems, such as integrated waste management for those on the cutting edge, is at best difficult. The UK has at the present time capital capacity, within the thermal treatment technology of incineration for municipal solid waste (MSW) and has nominally opted for this method to be expanded upon. However, modern facilities are not just based upon a mass reduc-. tion exercise, they combine material waste processing, energy recovery and the recycling of residues. Given the diverse nature of incinerator residues, it is necessary to establish operational parameters usable to both industry and governmental organisations engaged in these this sector.
