Regulatory approaches to land contamination

Over the last 10-15 years, the UK has developed a balanced approach to dealing with land contamination. This approach has been built around three principles: 1. the planning system — ensuring new development and land uses are protected from existing contamination. 2. the new contaminated land regime (Part IIA) — ensuring that existing development and land uses are protected from existing contamination. 3. the pollution prevention and control (PPC) regime — ensuring that no new contamination is created by major industries.
