摘要

Much attention has been paid in recent years to the environmental problems associated with landfill disposal sites. Particular concern has focused on the production of contaminated groundwater (leachate) and the threat that this poses to potable water supplies. In 1972, a survey commissioned by the UK's Department of the Environment indicated that 51 out of a total of 2494 landfill sites had the potential to seriously pollute potable water supplies due either to unfavourable hydrogeology or the nature of the waste dumped (Gray ef a/. 1974). One such site was the Station Farm landfill site near Buckden, Cambridgeshire, the subject of this report (Figure 1). Public attention was drawn to this site by an article in The Observer newspaper where Station Farm was described as a "serious risk" to groundwater (Lean & Ghazi 1990).
