COMMUNITY RECYCLING NETWORK

The community waste sector in this country is growing at an unprecedented rate. Only two years ago, members of the Community Recycling Network (CRN) were offering source-separated kerbside collection services to one million households. Now they collectively serve more than 1.6 million - seven per cent of the UK population - and this figure is rising. An ever-increasing number of local authorities are signing up the services of CRN members, as existing partnerships continue to go from strength to strength. In October 2002 the community recycling organisation Avon Friends of the Earth - which already provides an impressive range of services in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and Bath and North East Somerset - signed a contract with five district and borough councils in Somerset, bringing kerbside collection services to 150 000 households.
