Printing is the UK's fourth largest industry, consuming vast amounts of raw materials from adhesives to metals; plastics to fabric wipes; CDs to toxic chemicals; machinery to rubber. Its potential for harming the environment is obvious but while eco-awareness is, thankfully, growing throughout the industry, it stubbornly remains a sector in which sustainable policies have not been universally adopted. Waste creation is one of the industry's three major environmental impacts, but it has traditionally accepted that pollution and unsustainable resource use are inevitable results of its activities and, as a result, the industry has gained a reputation as a major polluter.
