From Northampton To Nigeria

University of Northampton academics have been working in Nigeria to help educate the country's electronic waste scavengers on the hazards of their "job" and to provide them with vital safety equipment and advice.rnThe academics, including Dr Margaret Bates, undertook the trip in partnership with the Basel Convention Regional Co-ordinating Centre for Africa, based at Nigeria's University of Ibadan. Margaret explained: "Hundreds of people make their livings from looking for precious metal components for recycling within the e-waste, burning the waste to get to them which releases carcinogenic substances. They are literally killing themselves to get to the 'usable' bits."
