Hot on the heels of the celebration to mark 100 years of the CIWM journal comes the news that an independent CIWM company and charity, one which seeks to manage and deliver a variety of research and other projects to benefit the sector and the wastes and resources profession, is 10 years old. Many happy returns to CIWM Research and Project Management (RPM). When the Landfill Tax was introduced, landfill operators were allowed to donate a small percentage of the tax they would otherwise pay to the Government to registered "environmental bodies", with the intention that the money would be used to put right some of the disbenefits associated with landfill operations. Strict rules were laid down on how the cash could be spent and the kinds of projects that could be funded.
